Encephalitis

What is Encephalitis?

Encephalitis is neoplasm of the active tissues in the brain caused by an infection or an auto-immune response. The neoplasm causes the brain to swell, in a result headache, stiff neck, sensitivity to light, mental confusion and seizures happen.

Encephalitis normally captures 15–20 people amongst 100,000 every year. More than 250,000 patients recovered in the last decade only in the U.S. The condition can affect anybody, but more often occurs in younger age people.

What is the main cause of encephalitis?

The most common cause of encephalitis virus is herpes simplex viruses, which cause cold sores and genital herpes. The source of chickenpox and shingles is varicella zoster virus.

Can encephalitis be cured?

If encephalitis is because of a bacterial infection, yes we can treat with intravenous antibiotics. Encephalitis happens by herpes-related encephalitis includes supportive care. As well as intravenous antiviral therapy with a drug such as acyclovir.

What happens if you get encephalitis?

Encephalitis often causes only amiable flu such as a fever or headache or no symptoms at all. Sometimes the symptoms are more severe. It can affect your senses like confused thinking, seizures, or problems with movement or with senses such as sight or hearing.

Caused by virus

What causes encephalitis?

The main reason of encephalitis depends on the season, country, and the type of subjection. The major cause of encephalitis is virus. Vaccines for measles, mumps, and chickenpox, have strongly reduced the rate of encephalitis from these diseases. However other viruses can also be cause of the virus. These incorporate herpes simplex virus and rabies.

Encephalitis can also materialize from:

  • Ticks (Lyme disease), mosquitoes (West Nile virus), and cats (toxoplasmosis) are most infectious and causes encephalitis.
  • Bacteria or germs
  • Auto-immune disease that attacks the brain. There is some typical immune system diseases can cause encephalitis. Especially when you are trying to fight cancer. Sometimes the this virus can come before cancer.

What are the symptoms of encephalitis?

Generally encephalitis gives a viral illness such as an upper respiratory infection. It may happen after a gastrointestinal illness and that also causes diarrhea, nausea, or vomiting. Symptoms depends, which part is attacking in the brain. These are the most traditional symptoms of encephalitis:

  • Headache or Migraine
  • Amiable flu (aches, fatigue, slight fever)
  • Responsiveness to light
  • Rigidity of neck
  • Sleepiness or dullness
  • Increased peevishness
  • Subjection
  • Carefulness, confusion, or hallucinations
  • Exhausted
  • Lack of appetite

In severe cases, symptoms may include:

  • Fragility or partly paralysis in the arms and legs
  • Dual vision
  • Wreckage of speech or hearing
  • Coma

These symptoms may similar with other health problems. Always seek your doctor advise

How we diagnose Encephalitis?

Your doctor can diagnose encephalitis based on symptoms and certain tests. During diagnose, your doctor may ask about your medical history.

  • Whether you had a cold or other breathing or gastrointestinal illness
  • Have you infected by tick bite or been around pets or other animals
  • Roaming to other countries or specific parts of the country

You might need these tests:

  • MRI (Magnetic Resonance Image). It’s a medical imaging technique uses large magnets, radio waves, and a computer. This process ensures detailed images of organs and structures within the body.
  • CT scan (Computed Tomography). This diagnostic tool very useful to detect detailed injuries and diseases of the body. This process scan shows detailed images of any part of the body, including the bones, muscles, fat, and organs. CT scans are much better than general X-rays.
  • Blood tests. In this test, doctor tests the blood for signs of infection or an immune system disorder.
  • Urine and stool tests. For infection purpose the urine and stool samples are examined.
  • Sputum culture. In this process this test checks the bacteria and infections on the material. That is coughed up from the lungs and into the mouth
  • Electroencephalogram (EEG). This test records, electrical activity using small metal disks (electrodes) attached to the scalp.

More Test may require.

  • Spinal tap (lumbar puncture). In this test, a specialized needle is placed into the lower back, into the spinal canal. That measures pressure in the spinal canal and brain. A little quantity of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) can be removed and sent for testing to see if there is an infection or other problems. CSF is the fluid that showers the brain and spinal cord.
  • Brain biopsy. This procedure used to remove tissue or cells from the body to exam it under a microscope. Unusually, a biopsy of affected brain tissue may be removed for diagnosis.
  • Intracranial pressure monitoring (ICP). This process shows the pressure inside the skull. The brain may swell if there is a severe brain injury or head surgery or brain infection or other problems. The brain swells, when the pressure inside the skull goes up. If the pressure goes significantly higher than normal, it may damage the brain. Intracranial pressure is measured by using a small, hollow tube (catheter) into the fluid-filled space in the brain.
